Dialing Your Life Into Christ

You press “seek” and suddenly your car or earphones are filled with music that encourages you and words that challenge you deeper in your journey with Christ. You’ve discovered South Florida’s local Christian radio station, 107.1 Spirit FM Radio.   Connecting 24/7 Launched just two years ago, 107.1 Spirit FM Radio is an outreach ministry of Calvary Chapel Pompano Beach. Through a series of opportunities that could only come from God, Pastor Ken Kerrigan and the church leadership began a journey to provide hope, encouragement and sound biblical teaching to Broward County. “I believe that radio broadcasting is the most […]

The Changing Face of Education in the US and How It’s Impacting the Faith of Children

“Our kids learn within a system of education devised for a world that increasingly does not exist.”[1] Technology has permeated the education system with American public schools providing at least one computer for every five students and $3+ billion per year for digital content. [2] One computer to five kids Tablets and smart boards don’t magically make pupils smarter unless teachers know how to use the devices properly and in a way that fosters engagement and encourages learning.[3] The old way consisted of “learn” then “do.” However, with ubiquitous access to information and 24/7 connectivity, learning and doing have become […]

The Power of We: Q Commons Encourages Hospitality Across Dividing Lines

Later that night, I texted my friend to apologize. I had not listened to her to understand, but rather to share my opinion and dismantle hers. I was out with old friends that I hadn’t seen in a long time. One friend and I began discussing a certain author’s theology. I was concerned that my friend found the author’s thinking to be compelling. I was apprehensive that she didn’t understand the implications of the author’s teachings. The discussion became a debate between friends, then a more pointed dismantling of the other’s opinion. We reached an impasse right as it was […]

Who Do Your Kids Look Up To?

Every fall as we pass 9/11 and are in the thick of storm season, I sit and process the amazing sacrifice our first responders and their families make. I can’t imagine weathering a storm knowing that your father/spouse is at the station preparing to go protect and serve the community. What a truly heroic act. Then it makes me stop and think about my kids and who they look up to…  Who do your kids look up to? Who are their heroes? Is it even important to think about who our children look up to? Only to the extent that we as […]

Jesus Christ: One Way or The Only Way to Heaven?

One of the most common concerns that people raise with me is the exclusivity of the Christian faith. Many people in our postmodern, relativistic society want to believe that all roads lead to heaven. In 2016 Lifeway Research conducted a poll and found that 60 percent of all Americans believe that “Heaven is a place where all people will ultimately be reunited with their loved ones.” Only 40 percent of those surveyed agreed with the statement that “Hell is an eternal place of judgment where God sends all people who do not personally trust in Jesus Christ.”(1) Heaven or Hell? The Power of Us: Expressing Appreciation

In the previous issue of the Good News, we shared a very common story of Zack and Ally, a couple living the Marriage Selfie life; appearances say they are amazingly happy in their marriage and successful in life. Sadly, social media has allowed us and sometimes pressures us to create “fake news” images and stories of relationship wellness and fulfillment, pictures of what we long and hope for versus the reality of where many of us live. I recently had a man share that his wife posted a picture of their family vacation that looked like they were blissfully happy. […]

Praying with My Eyes Open

I started 2018 with fasting and prayer. During an early prayer time, I felt God calling me to intercede like never before for my community. He asked me to grant these people, with whom I share proximity, a higher level of priority. I struggled with how to pray for my neighbors and their needs beyond a general covering thinking, “There’s gotta be an app for that.” An app for praying Not finding a “pray for your neighbors” app, I downloaded the Nextdoor app and began praying through daily posts. As I read each post, I brought my neighbors’ names and […]

Who’s Got Zach’s Back?

Imagine living your life in such a manner that increasingly no one wanted to be around you.  You were so self-obsessed and so focused on your own “so called” success that people and relationships did not matter. Now, imagine something happened that changed all that. Perhaps a book you read, perhaps a sermon you heard, perhaps a caring friend that spoke into your life, but you truly had a “scrooge moment” and woke up with a new perspective. You were different. You assumed everyone would be happy and excited and want to celebrate this new you. However, you were not received the way you thought you would be. Perhaps […]
