Good News Wants to Know… Would You Change Your Name?

Names often carry great significance and are an important part of our identity. This month Good News Wants to Know… If you had to change your name or could pick your own, what would your new name be and why would you choose that name? My name is Debra. I have always wanted my name to be the biblical Deborah. Deborah was an amazing woman, way ahead of her time, not afraid to be a judge, advisor, and leader in a time when no women were in such a role.  Yet she followed where God led. Dr. Debra A. Schwinn, President, Palm Beach Atlantic University I […]

Marriage is Like Hiking

The Live the Life South Florida team had the blessing of attending the National Alliance for Marriage & Relationship Education conference in Utah a few weeks ago. Most of us went a few days early to take in some sights. Unbeknownst to most of you, I have a sense of adventure, so when someone offers that opportunity, I’m usually game! My daughter Amanda always looks for fun and the once-in-a-lifetime activity when traveling, so she researched and said, “We have to go to Sundance and hike to Stewart Falls.” My only question was how difficult it was, and her answer […]

Are Faith and Enterprise Compatible?

Several years ago I met a local businessman who by all accounts was very successful in developing and running an enterprise. His business was operating out of several locations and there seemed to be a steady stream of clients at the door. At that time he admitted that he was struggling with the idea that his Christian walk was compatible with his business operation.  Faith and Enterprise The Bible makes connections to vocation and faith clear, indicating that we should do, “All things to the Glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). There are numerous stories of business events that require […]

Self-Esteem: What Mirror Do You Hold Up?

When Torrey, my oldest child, began school, somehow I felt she no longer needed my approval as much as before. She was older and other people, like her teachers, were in charge. Because Daddy was so busy, I began to miss key events in her life, such as her kindergarten play.  Absent Parents Leads to Low Self-Esteem Not long after that, I was walking in my neighborhood and heard the shouts of six-year-olds playing soccer. I sat down to watch the game and noticed that of the thirty boys on the two teams, only four parents had taken the time […]

Homeschool? Me?

I grew up going to traditional schools (private and public). As an adult, I ended up teaching every possible subject from physical education to social studies, and then I had kids. My intentions were to send them to school because that is how I grew up, and I turned out fine, right?  Homeschooling When my oldest son, Noah, was three and a half years old and my daughter was seven months old, I phoned a friend saying my oldest needed some “socialization.” She homeschooled and invited me to join the homeschool group she attended. I remember telling her, “I AM […]

School Choice, More than Ever: Three Big Reasons

The Good News provides a monthly column with important content having to do with topics from the legal community. This month, William “Bill” C. Davell and Ed Pozzouli, of Tripp Scott PA, address school choice. As Florida’s children return to classrooms, what better time is there to highlight the Sunshine State’s status as a national leader in school choice – and three reasons why that distinction matters more than ever? Even more, it’s worth considering whether, during this year or later, your family should take advantage of the state’s range of offerings that put families and their needs first. Bill […]

Pharmacy Students Loved Serving People of Honduras

Five hundred fifty patients served; 1,500 prescriptions filled; all in five days. Sounds exhausting. “Oh yeah,” said pharmacy student Tara McIntosh, recalling the Gregory Center for Medical Missions trip to Honduras in June. At day’s end, after dinner, a shower, devotions and debriefing, “that’s when you start to feel exhausted,” she said. “But not during the day, because the patients were so thankful and grateful, and praying for you while you’re praying for them. It felt like something I enjoy doing, all day, every day.” Tara and four other students from the Lloyd L. Gregory School of Pharmacy worked under […]

New Insurance and Condo Reforms: What the Laws Mean for You

The Good News provides a monthly column with important content having to do with topics from the legal community. William “Bill” C. Davell and Matthew Zifrony, a member of Tripp Scott’s acclaimed condominium and homeowners’ association practice, examines what new legislation means for you. Mission accomplished. Governor Ron DeSantis brought the Legislature back to undertake reforms of Florida’s troubled insurance industry and address condo safety concerns 11 months after the Surfside collapse that claimed 98 lives, and the two bills promptly passed. What does this new legislation mean for you?   Bill Davell: Let’s start with the insurance reform bill. […]

Some Assembly Required

(Scroll down to leave a comment on the assembly process of parenting.) Recently I bought a piece of furniture—a large hardwood table. When it arrived, the table came in a box from another country and had 80 pieces to assemble. The package included a small wrench and a 28-page book of directions. The picture of the completed project looked great, but the process was overwhelming, especially for a guy who thinks “wrench” is something you do to your back. All along I kept wondering how much it would cost to hire someone else to assemble it. Yet I took my […]
