In fact, you could benefit from the services of a professional financial advisor at several points in your life:Are you a “do-it-yourselfer”? Cosmic Compassion

“Record my misery; list my tears on your scroll – are they not in your record?” (Psalm 56:8). How do you see God? Sadly, far too many of us see Him as some distant deity, a “blind watchmaker,” disengaged from His creation and uninterested in them individually. Yet this verse makes it crystal clear that nothing could be further from the truth. Several of the best Bible translations render the middle section of Psalm 56:8, “Put my tears in your bottle.” Now, how is that for cosmic compassion?! How blessed we are to have a God who is not like […]

A Theology of Addiction

Life is hard because of the curse of sin. God looked over His finished creation and said, “It is good.” God is working out His plan of redemption and restoration to return to the “it is good phase.” Until then we must deal with the realities and consequences of sin’s curse. Some do so successfully while others don’t. This is where addiction enters the human story. Escape from life realities At the core addiction is about escape as a coping mechanism. We have studies about the effects of substances on the brain and genetic predispositions to addiction. These things can […]

Sidewalk Advocates for Life Expands in South Florida

One morning a mother of four approached the Fort Lauderdale Women’s Center with her husband seeking to abort her fifth child. Tom Walker, local director of Sidewalk Advocates, intercepted her and started a conversation with her as to why she wanted an abortion. She told him she was able to afford a child, but wasn’t comfortable with the pregnancy. After talking with him more, she told him she was a Christian, and had prayed that God would give her a sign if she wasn’t supposed to abort her child. She said that Walker sitting with her and talking to her […]

Did Forrest Gump Get It Right?

“I am not a smart man Jenny, but I know what love is,” said the fairly, simple-minded Forrest Gump. Who would disagree that living our lives in love is the most important calling upon each of us? Maybe Forrest Gump did have it figured out, but I am not sure I have quite mastered living a life of love. I am a work in progress. How about you? The very subject of love has its challenges. Love means so many different things to each of us. We each were “taught” love as a child and we each “caught” love as […]

Back to School Prayer Lays a Foundation for Success

As students return to school, people throughout South Florida will once again gather in prayer at their local elementary, middle and high schools on the Saturday before school starts to pray for the local campuses. If you cannot access the flagpole, gather by the main school sign along the road. For Palm Beach County public schools […]

Seamlessly Defining Worship, Work, Ministry, Service and Craftsmanship

Worship. Work. Ministry. Service. Craftsmanship. In our time and culture, we’ve defined each of those concepts differently, so that each needs its own distinct word in the English language. It’s become common, then, to think of worship as something you do on Sunday; work is what occupies your time Monday through Friday during business hours; ministry is something clergy does; service is a Saturday spent volunteering with Habitat for Humanity; and craftsmanship is an artist’s trade. In ancient Hebrew, however, there was one word to describe all of these concepts, and that word was avodah. It’s used by God first […]

Faith-Based Organizations Helping Overcome Opioid Addiction

The nation is facing an opioid epidemic. In May, Governor Rick Scott declared a public health crisis in Florida. Opioid overdoses claimed 582 lives in Broward in 2016, nearly two each day, which is higher than lives claimed by car accidents or gunshots, according to Broward Sheriff Scott Israel. Fighting the Opioid Addiction A Community Action Team, comprised of 45 to 50 treatment providers, doctors, community organizations and enforcement officials, is working hard to find solutions. And in July, 82 drug dealers and traffickers were arrested during a three-day crackdown in Broward to help curb opioid abuse and the rise […]

When God Shows Off

The idea birthed from a conversation Lisa and I had about what we could do for our kids at Christmas. Our family continues to grow with two sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law, three grandchildren and the random foster child here or there. Lisa thought laser tag in the front yard would be great fun…seriously laser tag in the front yard? I then suggested something a little more primitive, something so not us, something that would scream, “out of my comfort zone, nobody loves me.” Camping!   Camping The family, ours that is, does not have any experience in camping, no equipment, no […]
