A 12-year-old girl will undergo cataract surgery at Bernard Mevs Hospital in Haiti, thanks in part to a local Food For The Poor (FFTP) donor, who has made students’ eye health a priority. Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida recently donated 1,018 pounds of food to Food For The Poor to benefit destitute families in Haiti. The food was collected by 127 Girl Scouts from 16 participating troops through the annual Feeding Florida Together Food Drive. Donated food items include canned milk, vegetables, fruit, beans, meats and fish. Girl Scouts received a patch for their involvement in the April food drive. Local Allstate agents and United Way of Palm Beach County community volunteers educated hundreds of citizens and helped them build free disaster preparedness kits at the Mall at Wellington Green in June. The free kits included a hand-crank flashlight, first aid kit, whistles and other items proven to keep people safe and prepared. According to Adelphi University, nearly half of Americans lack emergency supplies for use in the event of a disaster. Covenant Village of Florida in Plantation received the gift of service from a group of graduating senior high school students from Duluth, Minnesota, who stopped by to complete a service project before heading off on their senior class trip in June. The group of 13 students and six chaperons from Lakeview Christian Academy, a non-denominational school in Duluth, flew into Fort Lauderdale International Airport on a Saturday with intentions to add color and beauty to the campus, which brought smiles to residents’ faces.
