The Art Deception and the Art of Discernment

He was practiced in the art of deception. People back then knew him as Alexander of Abonoteichus, a second century character Lucian describes in his essay “Alexander the False Prophet.” Apart from Lucian’s descriptions of him, we know little about the man. However, his impact in the ancient world was profound and even commemorated in coins from the second century.    Looking good, but… Lucian regarded Alexander as quite good looking: “He was a fine handsome man with a real touch of divinity about him, white-skinned, moderately bearded; he wore besides his own hair artificial additions which matched it so […]

Scandalous Mercy The Gospel is both Reasonable and Desirable

“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15).   We saw last month that the good news of the Gospel is both reasonable and desirable. During this cultural moment, it is important that we share Christ through both reason and romance, engaging both heads and hearts with the Truth and Beauty of Jesus. Last month we saw the Searching Mercy of Jesus displayed in His encounter with the woman at the well; this month we will […]

Assumptions-What You Said Is Not What I Heard; What You Did Was Not What I Saw

We process most communication based on what we know about the person communicating. We make positive or negative assumptions based on our personal experience with them or on the credibility of their reputation or the person or organization who made the introduction. If our experience has been negative, we will filter the person’s message through a negative lens. We’ll assume the worst. If our experience has been positive, we will assume the best even when the words don’t match. I have a friend who regularly says things that, although well-intended, come across as judgmental. Many times I’ve said, “They didn’t […]

Why Are Boundaries Important?

This last month our family spent some time in North Carolina. We love many things about being in the mountains: the fresh air, the trees, the rivers and creeks, and hiking. We usually spend several days exploring trails that lead us to amazing finds like gorgeous mountain tops and waterfalls. My two, like their dad, are explorers at heart. They spend hours by the creek where we stay finding salamanders, building forts and observing other wildlife. They love to wander “off the beaten path.” As we were hiking through a nearby national forest, I started noticing signs. “Please stay on […]

Pastoral Bonds Pay Dividends In The Wake of Surfside Tragedy

(Scroll down to leave a comment) Just a little over three years ago I had the privilege of starting a relationship with a seasoned, kind, loving and selfless pastor. I can remember it like it was yesterday. I reached out to him via Facebook messenger, and he was quick to reply back with his cell phone number. We set up a lunch date at Grand Lux Café in Aventura Miami. After we sat and talked for four hours, what started next would be the beginning of a beautiful Spiritual father and son relationship. Over the course of the next few […]

GOOD NEWS WANTS TO KNOW – God Story

(Scroll down to comment with your God story.) God often reveals himself to us in ways we don’t expect. This month Good News Wants to Know…. What is a time when God touched your life in a personal way – big or small – that you would call a God Story? When a fire destroyed our church in North Lauderdale in Sept.1997, it was unexpected and life changing. As the associate pastor I didn’t not want to take over as lead pastor (a year and a half later) with any debt. God answered the prayer, one year later, just before I […]

Collective Impact for the Gospel

Churches of our region face a complex problem: no single church, denomination, key leader or organization can change the spiritual climate of South Florida alone. The lostness of our region is too great, the brokenness is too complex and the pain too deep for even the largest, most resourced churches, networks or denominations to tackle. And, perhaps it was meant to be this way. We need one another. We were designed to link arms — to view each other as essential co-laborers rather than in competition with one another. However without a model and framework for impact, our collaborative efforts […]

The Dream of God’s Heart

Did you know that God has a dream in His heart for you? He has desires and wants for your family, our city and our nation. This is a beautiful part of who God is. He is a God who thinks, loves, grieves, rejoices…and dreams. When I began to see this part of God’s nature, something changed in the way I saw and related to Him on the heart level. Seeing this part of Him stirred up a desire in me to know His heart and not just His works. A few months ago I asked God this question: “Father, […]

Leading Community With Friendly Competition

We love a little bit of friendly competition around the OneHope office, and occasionally during lunch we will break out the backgammon boards. Vice Presidents will go head to head, moving each piece hoping to be declared the victor. The leadership team may play against the youngest members of our staff. Novice players will learn from more experienced players and vice versa. The game is a perfect blend of skill and luck, so even a beginner can beat someone more experienced once in a while. Anyone who wants to play can join, and it always ends in good fun…but not […]
