Ex-pornographer uses Internet for gospel

Godbeat Media Group has announced the official launch of Godbeat.tv, a family-friendly environment akin to YouTube. Users can upload and share videos and personal stories. They can create profiles and video blogs and share homemade footage of their band and other artists, their church and youth groups, and so forth. But unlike YouTube and similar video-sharing websites, President Jeff Myers of Godbeat.tv says consumers will not have to worry about content. “Every single video uploaded will be screened by a live person at the time it is uploaded,” says Myers. “We will make sure every video on Godbeat.tv is 100% […]

Barney Frank says Fannie ‘too high’

The Obama administration recently approved base salaries of $900,000, plus $3.1 million in deferred payments, and another $2 million in bonuses for the CEOs of the failed mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. When asked if tax dollars should pay those bonuses, or if they should be cancelled, the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), told CNSNews.com that the bonuses were “too high” but “nothing can be done now.” The $6 million compensation packages were approved by the Treasury Department and the Federal Housing Finance Agency and made public on Dec. 24, 2009, Christmas […]

Reading the Bible for all its worth

I have been a bookworm for almost as long as I can remember. Rarely have I met a good book that I didn’t want to read. I’ve enjoyed everything from pondering the writings of great theologians and thinkers to perusing something as mundane as the sports page. As time has crept by, however, I find that I enjoy nothing more than reading and meditating on God’s written word, the Bible. Why? I could write a separate, full-length article to answer that question. But here are just a few personal reasons. One, I want to know God’s heart more and more, […]

Tenn school agrees stop handing Bibles

A school district in Tennessee has agreed to stop handing out Gideon Bibles to students during the school day, under threat of a lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union. The Tennessee chapter of the ACLU wrote Wilson County school officials in October, on behalf of the parents of a fifth-grade student. The parents objected to their daughter being pressured to come forward and take a Bible, along with fellow students. The parents, who were not identified by the ACLU, said their daughter was brought into a school gym with other fifth-graders during the school day for a presentation by […]

Seeing is believing, for a visual generation

Sandra Bullock, starring in the movie The Blind Side, made an amazing statement during an interview. Speaking about the Christian mom she portrayed, Bullock confessed, “I finally got to see someone who actually lives what they believe.” “I finally got to see” – Those are very indicting words. In this true story, Bullock plays the role of a foster mom whose faith compelled her to adopt a boy from the streets. This mom lived out her faith in her home, for the boy and for all of us, including the actress, to see. As so often happens, the story behind […]

Wikipedia: Freedom in Community

Ten years ago this month, Internet entrepreneur Jimmy Wales hired Larry Sanger to develop an online encyclopedia. You may have never heard of that project, titled “Nupedia,” but you’ve probably heard of the site that emerged from its ashes. Wikipedia is not only one of the most successful initiatives in the history of the Web, but also a shining example of the potential of human cooperation. Wikipedia sprouted in the fertile soil of freedom and possibility that characterized the early days of the Internet. Andrew Lih tells the story in The Wikipedia Revolution (2009). Wales, a principal of the technology […]

Failure to tweak your savings could cost you

One of the best ways to sock away substantial long-term dollars for retirement is to participate in an employer-sponsored 401(k). In fact, maximum contributions to 401(k), 403(b) and 457 accounts rose to $16,500 in 2009, with an additional $6,000 contribution available as a catch-up provision for those over the age of 50. Unfortunately, many participants in retirement plans leave their plans on autopilot and fail to tune up their plans periodically. Here are some things to consider as you tweak your hard-earned retirement savings for optimum performance. Make consistent pre-tax depositsOut of sight, out of mind. You won’t miss the […]

Power talk!

Before God called me into Life, I spent more than two decades training athletes and working as an exercise physiologist. A considerable portion of that time included studying and applying mental preparation strategies to help create peak performance states. That study included the area of self or “power” talk. Power talk includes “trigger phrases” such as “I can do it,” “Be the ball,” and “Focus, focus, focus.” It also uses mood words like “drive,” “explode” and “hustle.” When said with appropriate emphasis, these terms tend to generate a positive emotional and physiological response. Examples of power talk If you spend […]

Crash course planning for eternity

Not many of us will be able to say in our lifetime that we have survived a plane crash, but Andrew Palau, the 43-year-old son of renowned evangelist Luis Palau, can now add plane crash survival to the list of things that God has brought him through. Andrew, his wife Wendy, and their three children went through this harrowing experience just a few weeks ago while traveling to visit Wendy’s family for Christmas vacation. After catching a red-eye from Portland, Ore. to Chicago, then hopping on a second flight to Miami, the Palau family was on their third and final […]
