Court rules in favor of keeping “God” in Pledge

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled March 18 that teacher-led recitations of the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools are constitutional. Atheist Michael Newdow has been pushing to have “one nation under God” removed from the pledge. Bruce Hausknecht, judicial analyst for Focus on the Family Action, said the court was correct in its assessment that the “pledge is not a prayer. It establishes a patriotic allegiance, not a religion, and it confirms that this is a nation founded under God, not under atheism.” In a separate decision on a companion case, the same three-judge panel unanimously rejected Newdow’s […]

Nevada cracking down on brothel ads

A federal appeals court has upheld a Nevada law that prevents brothels from advertising in areas of the state where prostitution is not legal, such as Las Vegas and Reno, according to a report by The Associated Press. There are about two dozen brothels in the state. The ruling applies to billboards, Newspapers and leaflets. Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto hailed the ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The court reversed a 1979 ruling that laws prohibiting brothel advertising in counties where prostitution is illegal were overly broad and unconstitutional. Family advocates expect an appeal by […]

The law breaks with more than 30 years of federal policy prohibiting the use of federal dollars to directly pay for abortions. Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum is heading up the lawsuit. It was filed in federal court in Pensacola, Fla., to “protect the rights and interests of American citizens,” McCollum said. South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster said the health care reform is “an assault against the Constitution.” He […]

Focus on the Creator not just his handiwork

Peering out my 18th-floor window at the Denver Grand Hyatt, I was delighted to see a fresh layer of snow blanketing the city. Ah, what a welcome sight for a perennial Floridian. I can’t recall the last time I awoke to the sight of the fluffy white stuff sprawled across the ground. It was the final day of the Jerry Jenkins Christian Writers Guild conference. After four days of sitting in hotel conference rooms listening to intense seminars and speeches stretching my mind and imagination, I was hungry to get a glimpse of the majestic Rocky Mountains, another rare sight […]
