National Day of Prayer Planned on May 2nd

On Thursday, May 2, people of all faiths are invited to pray for our nation during the National Day of Prayer. The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance that was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. The theme this year is “love one another,” based on John 13:34: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (NIV). Stella Tokar, of The Bridge Church in Pembroke Pines, is the South Florida coordinator […]

Meet the Needs

God created us for an intimate relationship with Him and others. Last month we addressed bonding; we were created with biological needs for bonding and closeness. We all have needs and were designed to be dependent. We’re physically needy. We need food, clothing, water and shelter to survive. We’re spiritually needy. Man needs communion with God and freedom from guilt and shame; we need forgiveness, mercy and grace from God. We’re also emotionally and relationally needy. We need a relationship with God and others. We’re intellectually needy. We’re born with intellectual capacity, but we need instruction and information. Many of […]

Explosive Growth of the First Century Church

Last month we studied the reality of the Resurrection by sharpening our focus on two different eyewitness accounts: the embarrassing eyewitness accounts and the enemy eyewitness accounts. In the ancient world, women were regarded as second-class citizens whose testimony was inadmissible in a court of law; therefore, no gospel writer would ever invent a story of the Resurrection with women being the first to peer into the empty tomb and see Jesus alive. To say that a woman was the first to see the risen Savior was too embarrassing. Growth of the Church Then we looked at the dramatic conversion […]

Parenting—the call of a lifetime

As we spend this month getting ready to celebrate Mother’s Day, there is joy and pain in equal measure around this day for many. Especially those who have lost their mother for any reason. Working for a global ministry that serves children and youth, I am deeply saddened by the worldwide epidemic of family brokenness. It increases the weight of the spiritual responsibility we carry as believers to be spiritual mothers and fathers to the young among us. Who better to share his heart on this topic than my friend, Jim Daly, who has personally experienced the pain of abandonment, […]

Good News Wants to Know…

In an effort to help our readers get acquainted with leaders who are making an impact in South Florida, we’re asking the kind of questions that make for interesting conversation at a neighborhood barbecue. This month we want to know what their children have to say, not what they think they will say…so we asked them to call them (If they don’t have a child, call someone they may have mentored) and ask them … What would the public or your friends be SURPRISED to learn about you? Here’s what we learned…   From his son Cam: -Romney Rogers coached baseball, football and soccer […]

The UN-CAMP

When deciding on summer plans for your teen, be it youth group camp, sleep-away camp or day camp, how do you distinguish? When I was growing up, the experience was pretty much the same except for what I slept on and how many people were sharing the oxygen in the room. I also remember when 7UP came on the scene. If you grew up watching TV in the 80s, you would remember the commercials with the baritone voice of the island man saying, “It’s the Uncola, aaaaaah!” or “It’s Marvelous, absolutely marvelous.” We watched him drink the “cool and refreshing […]

First Baptist Fort Lauderdale Welcomes New Lead Pastor

The congregation of First Baptist Fort Lauderdale welcomed the Rev. James Welch as their new lead pastor on Sunday, March 24. Coming to Fort Lauderdale from New Orleans, Louisiana, Pastor James and his wife Amy have three children: Addison, William and Blythe. As a family, they planted Harbor Community Church in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, where they made it a family and missional priority to love their city and intentionally engage the unchurched for the sake of the gospel. Pastor James’ heart is to bring that same mentality to South Florida. “Our hearts are full of love for a […]
