4KIDS will Celebrate 20 Years with a Family Festival Featuring Hawk Nelson

In the 1990’s, South Florida was a dark place to be a child in foster care. A broken system led to national news headlines of children suffering from abuse, starvation, disappearance or death in the very homes that were supposed to be safe. Then one bright woman began knocking on doors pleading for forgotten kids. One church listened, and in 1997 Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale caused this little spark of hope to spread like wild fire. It developed into what we now know as 4KIDS of South Florida. Now celebrating 20 years, 4KIDS of South Florida has been a beacon […]

Lazy Days of Summer

Summer.  Just the word evokes memories of lazy days spent sleeping late, trips to the beach, delicious barbecues with friends, vacations to exciting, new places, and trips home to see family.  When I was a child, it always felt as if the world stopped for a few months and the longer days were filled with endless hours of freedom.  Unfortunately, we all have to grow up and undertake adult responsibilities, but we should never lose that childlike zeal for life and quest for spontaneity.   Go barefoot Studies show that spending time in nature improves vigor, sharpens brain function, enhances […]

Practice Love, Grace and Truth

Americans awoke to news of the deadliest terror attack since 9/11 on the morning of June 12th after 29-year-old Omar Mateen opened fire inside Pulse, a gay nightclub, killing 49 and injuring 53. In a 911 call, Mateen claimed allegiance to the Islamic State, but the investigation continues into whether he had any real ties to ISIS, was inspired by their propaganda or was motivated by his own inner turmoil. The answer to those questions perhaps matters little to the grieving loved ones of the 49 people, created in the image of God, who lost their lives. The news was […]

A Mother’s Reflection on Graduation Day

It seems like just yesterday when I held him in my arms for the first time. God set eternity in the heart of this new being and I had the privilege of birthing him into existence. Staring at me with his big, blue eyes, he listened intently as I whispered to him everything that he needed to know in his first moments of life. I explained to him who I was, how happy I was to be his mommy and how I was going to take care of him and teach him all he needed to know until he […]

Senior Veterans Take Dream Flights at North Perry Airport

Four South Florida seniors from Covenant Village of Florida strapped on goggles and headsets and soared through the skies in a 1942 open-cockpit Boeing Stearman at the North Perry Airport in March during an event to honor them for their military service. These Dream Flights were presented by Ageless Aviation Dreams Foundation (AADF), a non-profit organization established and dedicated to honoring seniors and United States military veterans. They offer these flights primarily to individuals living in long-term care communities with a mission to “give back to those who have given.” Funded by donations, the Dream Flights utilize a Boeing […]

Open Carry: A Bad Idea for Florida

Sheriff Scott Israel   With more than 350 mass shootings in the United States in 2015, gun violence weighs heavily in everyone’s thoughts.  Having more guns brandished openly on our streets is not the answer, yet that is exactly what will happen if a very dangerous bill passes in Tallahassee this year. The “open carry” bill would further weaken Florida’s already permissive gun laws by allowing concealed weapon permit holders to carry their guns openly and visibly virtually anywhere.  This “Wild West” open carry proposal would make Florida a more dangerous and menacing place, not a safer place.  That is […]

Halloween or Reformation Day?

What are we supposed to make of Halloween? I don’t think anyone really knows. Somehow, bizarrely, it has turned into a socially acceptable, culturally-embraced evening for children to dress up as ghosts, ninjas, princesses or athletes and approach total strangers’ houses under the cover of darkness asking them for candy. Last time I recall trick or treating it was the late 1980’s and I was dressed in a homemade, itchy costume meant to resemble ALF, America’s favorite TV alien with an appetite for cats. For my neighbor, Halloween means it’s time to break out their massive inflatable black cat in […]

Freedom and Forgivenes

I recently was interviewed by a reporter regarding a new U.S. law that may affect small business owners’ websites and how they comply with accommodations for people with disabilities. There are a lot of existing laws that already make it very difficult to run a small business without the burden of having more. But the reporter was a bit surprised at my response. He thought that I was extremely positive despite not fully agreeing with some of the mandates in the law. I explained that I am just grateful to be a small business owner in America; if there are […]

Focusing on What Really Matters

Happy anniversary and thank you to all of our readers over the past 17 years. Sometimes I feel like Time magazine looking back over all the years with all the stories, all the ministries and all the church events we’ve covered. If you were to look in the office of our editor, Shelly, you would see a shelf of the archived Good News that goes back through most of our spiritual lives. I want to thank the people of South Florida for all they have done over the years. We are blessed to be a part of reporting truth from […]
